Certain bacteria and other viral infections can cause neuroretinitis which is a form of infection that affects the retina of the eye. Diffuse unilateral subacute neuroretinitis is the medical name for this condition. The common symptoms and affects of this medical problem are distorted or lost vision plus optical dick swelling known as disk inflammation as well as the onset of lesions on the retina itself.
If the condition is left for too long then the optical nerves may deteriorate and the retinal vessels can narrow causing more complex vision loss and permanent damage to the eye end vision. Children are often more susceptible to permanent damage because they often do not themselves that their eye has a problem. This is made more prominent by the limited visual and physically noticeable affects that neuroretinitis causes so the parents and guardians do not recognize the symptoms until secondary symptoms such as atrophy of the retina and leakage of the eye starts to occur.
Neuroretinitis is not a prejudice medical problem and affects people from all countries around the world, people of all ages and both sexes. The condition does occur more frequently in males than females and medical records suggest that patients between the ages of 20 to 40 are usually more at risk. If you believe you have symptoms of this disease then consult a medical practitioner for a complete eye examination immediately.
Treatment is often started with a course of mild steroids unless the symptoms are unclear and then no treatment is given until such times that the disease is 100% conclusive. Also known as the cat scratch disease this problem occurs when the patient has had physical contact with a cat which may have scratched the patient leaving an open wound which becomes infected.
